How to tell if outreach is working before anyone books a call

Booked calls show up late. The early signs that tell you a campaign is working weeks before the first meeting lands.

Three weeks in, nothing on the calendar, and the question shows up: is this outreach working?

"Give it time" is a bad answer. Booked calls show up late. You need signs that move sooner. These are the ones I watch.

What the replies say, not how many. "We already have someone for this" is a good reply. So is "not right now, we're mid-move." Both mean the person read it and it was relevant enough to answer. "Thanks, I'll keep you in mind" is someone being polite to a stranger. If most replies sound like that, the message is landing as generic.

Who's replying. Check them against your ideal client. Sometimes a campaign gets decent replies from completely the wrong people, smaller companies or the wrong roles. That's useful, and invisible if you only count.

Second replies. This is the one nobody tracks, and it's the best sign I know. Of the people who replied once, how many replied again? A conversation that goes two or three messages deep is most of the way to a call, even if nobody has mentioned a calendar.

What not to worry about

A slow start. Sometimes LinkedIn just takes time, and a lead is a lead until they say no. People see your message between meetings and come back to it later, and plenty of good conversations start a few messages in. One rude reply isn't worth worrying about either. It happens.

When to stop

If after three weeks the replies are all polite brush-offs and nothing has gone past one exchange, stop. Change who you're reaching and what you open with. Three weeks is a cheap way to learn a group isn't working.

Questions people ask

How long does LinkedIn outreach take to work?

Early signs show up within a few weeks, in the kind of replies you get. Booked calls take longer, because good conversations often start a few messages in.

How do you know if outreach is working?

Look at what the replies say, who's replying, and how many conversations go past one message. Those move well before calls get booked.

What counts as a good reply to cold outreach?

Any reply that engages with the subject, even "we already have someone for this." It means the right person read it and it was relevant.
